Distance of Intimacy, 2000
Site-Specific Interactive Multimedia Installation at Momenta Art, Brooklyn, NY

Two Videos, Binoculars, Headphones, Audio Recording, VCR/Monitor, Computer, Sensors, B/W Monitoring Device, and Data Projector.

Distance of Intimacy is a site-specific interactive installation presented at Momenta Art in Brooklyn, NY. In this work, binoculars and headphones are set-up as private and desirable interfaces. Participants with headphones that contain personal phone messages watch through suspended binoculars a video of edited cars and car race footage displaced and suspended in the laundromat window across the street from the gallery. This triggers projection of animated loops of dislocated sound and global internet web cam images in the rear room of the gallery. The work positions viewers at a place of in-betweenness, generating thoughts about public and private space, global relationship, cultural identity, surveillance and voyeurism.
